OUR MISSION

“Aspirational urban design for a sustainable future.”

WHO WE ARE

SPACELAB is a team of diversely skilled design professionals, qualified across a wide range of disciplines and technical skills. Our light filled studio in Turner enjoys a leafy urban outlook here in the centre of Canberra.

SPACELAB's interactive environment nurtures the energy and enthusiasm of our entire project team of urban designers, statutory and feasibility planners, landscape architects and conceptual artists to push boundaries and challenge the norm in the pursuit of exemplary outcomes for our clients and the future residents of the spaces and places we create.

We uncover and realise a site’s potential working around and through planning and legislative obstacles to deliver high quality projects.

In our pursuit of design lead development, we challenge ingrained process and conflict between policy areas to find workable pathways to benefit the people who will live there.

Our foundation of experience spans decades. Our focus is on the future.

OUR STORY

WHAT WE DO

As Project Lead Consultants, we oversee teams of collaborative consultants who together, allow us to progress conceptual ideas through to detailed design and construction on projects as diverse as inner-city redevelopment and placemaking projects through to masterplanning entire new communities.

Our Project Planners have taken over 20,000 medium density dwellings through development feasibility assessment, consultation and design management, all the way through to handover to the client’s builders and buyers.

Our urban planners have worked on over 30 significant residential estate projects in the past 20 years across the ACT and NSW totalling over 15,000 new homes sites.

Our Statutory Planners work within our design projects to push the boundaries of planning systems to advocate changes in policy interpretation that are struggling to keep pace with changes in urban design best practice, to improve urban design outcomes for our clients’ projects and the people who live in them.

Our advocacy work within planning systems and taxation of property development is ongoing.

Our Landscape Architects have created the concept and detailed design for literally hundreds of parks and places. We have been “creating timeless places” for a long time before “placemaking” was a buzzword. We designed “Floriade” for over a decade when it was the largest tourism event in Canberra.

WHY WE DO IT

SPACELAB pursues leading edge design outcomes. We challenge policy and processes because advocating for a better design is aspirational and purposeful.

Our analysis of past projects has shown that the most profitable outcome is also very likely the best design outcome, because great design intrinsically is the most desirable and most valuable outcome. Investment in great design is a small investment that reaps rewards for the life of a project.

Our passion and energy are reflected within the design of new communities that form the structure for development that houses

many thousands of people. These communities are interlaced with hundreds of hectares of parks, community facilities, wetlands, playgrounds and walking trails. We create timeless places of varying scale for the benefit of people seeking a peaceful place or a place to gather.

We love to work collaboratively with forward thinking clients and their consultant teams of architects, engineers and specialist consultants to design and realise every project we participate in. Each project we influence reinforces our positive appreciation for the continuing growth, urbanisation and renewal of urban places and spaces.
