Whitlam is the first of Molonglo's suburbs to be developed north of the Molonglo River. SPACELAB were engaged by the Suburban Land Agency (SLA) in early 2017 to project manage and design this estate, with a projected 2100 suburban blocks, school site and a large proportion of urban open space. in the southern Molonglo area of Canberra.
SPACELAB urban planners and landscape architects, in collaboration with a large stakeholder group, lead the design, developing a master plan for the whole site. SPACELAB's design considered existing topography, riparian corridors and interface with major arterial roads.
The open space network was designed to enhance view sheds, whilst a strong sense of place is created through the the choice of street tree plantings through to highly detailed and bespoke recreation spaces.
Ultimately, nearly one third of Whitlam’s total area will comprise public open space, connecting residences to a network of passive pedestrian paths, local and neighbourhood parks, a new school and local centre, as well as adjoining future recreation spaces along the Molonglo River.
