Amaroo School identified the need to expand its overburdened traditional play areas and approached SPACELAB with a design wish list for a new sensory play space.
Drawing from the school’s wish list, SPACELAB designed the 800m² site with multiple play opportunities, catering for both active and quiet play, and considering the needs of developmentally challenged students.
Tactile and natural materials such as sand, wood, and mixed plantings, musical elements such as bongos, moving elements such as the clatter bridge, and calming ocean-themed colours were incorporated to the space to deliver an optimal sensory experience. The new soft landscape was planted with deciduous trees to ameliorate the area’s harsh climate, which was previously uncovered tarmac.
When Amaroo Sensory Space was opened, the kids were given the space to take care of and play in, both tasks which the students took on with excitement and enthusiasm.
